About Labuan Bajo, Indonesia
Labuan Bajo is a small harbour town on the western tip of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It serves as the main gateway to Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Komodo Airport (LBJ) connects directly to Bali, Jakarta, and several other Indonesian cities, making it easy to reach from anywhere in the country.
The park is home to around 3,000 Komodo dragons, the world's largest living lizards, found only on Komodo Island and nearby Rinca Island. Rinca is often less crowded and offers equally rewarding wildlife encounters. Beyond the dragons, the waters around Labuan Bajo are famous for Manta Point, where giant oceanic manta rays gather year round in warm currents averaging 27°C.
Padar Island is one of the most photographed spots in all of Indonesia, with its three curved bays of white, black, and pink sand visible from the summit. Pink Beach gets its colour from microscopic red coral fragments mixed into the sand, one of only a handful of pink sand beaches on the planet.
The best time to visit Labuan Bajo is between April and December, when seas are calm and visibility for diving and snorkelling can reach over 25 metres. Whether you are planning a quick day trip by speedboat or a multi-day Phinisi sailing voyage, Labuan Bajo has something unforgettable for every kind of traveller.
